Wishing all a very happy Dasara!

सर्व वाचकांना विजयादशमीच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा
Vijayadashmi or Dasara is one of the sadeteen muhurta (3 1/2 auspicious days) according to Marathi tradition. It is a day when good prevails over evil. Students are supposed to worship their books as representation of Saraswati, the goddess of learning and arts.

According to Marathi customs, people are supposed to exchange leaves of Apta (Bauhinia racemosa) as they are considered "as good as gold" on this day. Probably the intention in the old days was to encourage people to learn about important trees around them. Sadly every year thousands of Apta trees are hacked so that Marathi Manoos can "exchange gold".

3M requests all readers of this blog to stop this practice and exchange virtual apta leaf greetings or even better actually gift an Apta sapling to friends and relatives.
