“You can’t survive in Maharashtra without learning Marathi”

This article in Bangalore edition of Indian Express claims that “if we go to Maharashtra we cannot survive without learning Marathi”… 3M almost choked laughing after reading this line!

It is the only state in India where you can survive and flourish without knowing the local language… when locals are more than eager to speak your tongue why should migrants learn it?

  1. Yeah I too read that and was amused. Maharashtrians are the only ones without any rational love for their mother tongue.

  2. I think its the case with my native city too,Delhi. We interact in English and Hindi both.Same is the case with Mumbai,Hindi or English or Marathi would be good, although Marathi isn't that dominant.

    Hope that doesn't change.

  3. @ Tanuj

Typical Northie attitude! We will come to your land because of benefits but will not learn your language... Locals have to adjust to our language!

    I really hope this changes!

  4. I think anyone who speaks Marathi can speak Hindi well too. Also I don't think Marathi is that dominant which is a good thing in my view for people who are not from Maharashtra or aware of Marathi. It would make them easily adapt to a new environment and live without much of a problem.

  5. Imagine how diffcult it would be for a Non-Hindi person to adjust in Delhi!

  7. So please appreciate the fact that Maharashtra is a good host that 'adjusts' to make its guests comfortable... unlike most of India

  8. I like Mumbai, probably more than Delhi.I wouldn't deny that.Only problems for me about Mumbai is the lack of space and overcrowded places. Also the traffic, its just too much!I know am going out of track but yeah on the language aspect Maharashtra it doesn't entirely live on its local language. That's partly a reason why its a global city.

  9. Do you think for better tomorrow all Hindi speaking states should learn one more Indian language?
That will bring true integrity and one day we will create a comprehensive National language which most of us will agree to.

  11. @Pravin,I mentioned Marathi not being dominant is because its not the only language spoken in Maharashtra. And that's a good thing to be a global city.Imagine if New York were to speak only English and not having other native speakers like Spanish etc etc.
